It's been too long in the waiting but the B team are back with the backlash that"s been two months in the waiting. Too many times this season, opponents have undeservedly walked away with the points because of over charitable defensive clangers from the Bolts but at last a clean sheet finally arrived. With father and son Ian Thomasson and Mark both returning to the defence, it was looking steady for 30 minutes but when Ian limped off with a groin injury it was veteran substitute Rick Timmis who stepped in to do a sterling job at centre back. Jimmy Freeborn was released from the recent shackles of being an unorthodox defender and moved to his the natural marauding position up front. After being thwarted of a clearly genuine goal after 20 minutes, he put the record straight with a turn on the volley and set the Bolts on their way.
There is a new dawning in the B team with fresh shoots of talent appearing in the form of midfielder Simon Turner and centre forward Ben Horan who both showed 90 minutes of commitment fitness and class not seen for a long time in the B team. It was Horan who scored twice on his debut once from a superb Freeborn cross and then with a deft lob.
When teenager (a word never used before in the match reports) Nick Skelly rounded the keeper for goal 4 it was celebrations all round and selection problems for manager Milne next week. No doubt victory was down to a clean defensive inspired once again by the underrated Dave Sandbrook in goal.
Has Timmis hasn’t found centre back his true position after 35 years? Doubtful, but there is no doubt that youth enthusiasm and commitment to the cause is essential for the B team to make Saturdays result a more common occurrence this season. Bring it on!
