Accrington 3 Old Bolts B 1
The B team started off against Accrington with a refreshing zest which reached a climax after 30 minutes when the seasoned midfielder Milne burst through a packed midfield to latch on to a through pass from Dan Barrett to loft the ball calmy over the oncoming keeper from 25 yards to give the Bolts a deserved lead. Things were looking good and the team were playing some neat football until Accrington against the run of play equalised with a fortunate shot that trickled onto the inside of David Sandbrook's post just before halftime.
With second teamers Chris Neasham and Mark Thomasson in to boost the numbers the B team should have been more assertive but early in the second half, a momentary lapse of concentration gave Accrington the advantage as they took the lead from a close range header.
The B team pushed for an equaliser for the remainder of the game and left themselves exposed at the back. In the dying minutes Accrington nabbed a third goal that whilst flattering Accrington, highlights a growing concern that the B team has yet to settle into a formation that brings out the best in a squad of capable players.
Too many long balls that missed out the midfield and the lack of fire power in attack highlights the fact that quality and size of squad is no guarantee of an easy season ahead.
