Fresh from their midweek triumph in the LAL cup, the Old Boltonians faced a weekend fixture against an Old Mancunians side that are entrenched in mid-table obscurity. Old Mancunians had failed to help out the Old Boltonians title charge by being incapable of taking any points from Old Blackburnians on the previous weekend. The title is well and truly in the hands of Old Blacks but all the Old Boltonians can do is play their own game and rack up as many points as possible.
The Old Mancunians approached the game like a side that didn't have a lot to play for. The Old Boltonians were in the very same position last year and are all too aware how easy it is to become disillusioned when there is nothing to play for except pride. The game commenced with the Old Mancunians only having 10 players, due to late arrivals. Unsurprisingly, the Old Boltonians had the better of the early exchanges of the game. However, they were unable to make their numerical advantage count and despite a large proportion of possession, they looked slightly lax. Ten minutes into the game, numerical parity was restored, but instead of encouraging Old Mancunians, it acted to give the Old Boltonians a kick up the backside that they desperately needed. Possession was kept well, but they were now playing with increased attacking impetus. The first goal of the game came courtesy of a quality move from the Old Boltonians. Some nice interplay in midfield between Matt McCllelan and Rob Taylor resulted in Paul Wheatcroft being fed into the inside right channel. A great, flighted ball to the back post was met on the run by Josh Melling, who fired his header into the corner of the net. 1-0. Despite further domination of the half, an elusive second goal escaped the Old Boltonians.
In what is becoming a far too frequent story, the Old Boltonians allowed their opposition back into the game in the second half. However, with typically resolute defending from James Kinsler, Craig Jolley, Rob Gamble, Robin Myers and later Michael Platt, the concession of a goal looked about as likely as a referee adding less than 5 minutes injury time onto a game that Man United aren't winning. However, in contrast to the awarding of 'Fergie time' the Old Boltonians conceded an unlikely equaliser - Anthony Duffy making a very rare mistake.
Now was the time for the Old Boltonians to stand up and be counted - a quick response was required. And that is what was delivered. A free kick from the left wing, mid-way inside the Old Mancunians half was flicked on by Robin Myers to the back post where James Kinsler was lurking. The ball looped sweetly for a volley on his right foot about 10 yards from goal. Here, Kinsler's reputation worked in his favour, as the Old Mancunians keeper began to trot around the goal to collect the ball from the adjacent field where most of the ball winning centre-half's better attempts end up. But today was not any normal day. The ball flew like a North Korean
missile into the back of the onion bag. 2-1.
Despite a late onslaught by the Old Mancunians, the Old Boltonians managed to see off any further goal attempts to record a well needed victory.
